NEA NCCS Climate Change Forum, North East District

CER students, Joanna, Sandra, Zhi Cong and Zen Chen were invited to support the Climate Change Forum Programme, a community event for North East District organized by National Climate Change Secretariat and NEA at Sengkang CC on 26 November 2011. There,  they set up the Standby Energy Saver demo kit and explained to the Sengkang Residents how it can help them to save electrical bill by shutting down the electrical appliances rather than leaving them in standby mode.

Kampung Senang Flag Day 2011


On 12 November 2011 (12/11/11), EO students volunteered to help Kampung Senang sell flags at Tampines. This is to help raise funds for their organisation to better help the society. Despite the sudden downpour and afternoon sun, we enjoyed doing our part for the society. =)

On the 14th October this year, some of the Main Committee members of energy Oasis attended a talk-cum-presentation that was organised by PlanetSolar. PlanetSolar is a project that aims to show and share with the world that 'clean' technologies are achievable with the current technology. Hence, the team designed and built a boat that runs enitrely on solar power.

Thailand Study Trip 2011

A study trip to Thailand from 10-15 October 2011 was organised for CER students.


For the first 3 days, the students stayed at the All Green Learning Center (AGLC). There they had experience making green products and producing wood vinegar.









The students also got to take trips to hydro, wind and solar power plants.

Trip to clean energy expo 2011 @Suntec


On the 2nd of November 2011, several MIE(Microelectronics) and CER(clean energy) students, accompanied by several lecturers made a trip to Suntec City where a three day clean energy expo was held. Booths from various companies around the world filled the exhibition hall and they showcased a wide variety of clean energy related products, systems, ideas etc. Compared to last year, the expo this year showed more solar related companies (according to my friend who also went last year) and I personally felt that there was a wide variety such as LEDs, cooling systems, biomass, solar, wind etc. Overall, I felt that it is more of the experience that I gained from this expo and it is really an eye-opener.

National Climate Change Competition 2011


Standby Energy Saver, a prototype developed by a group of four CER students, Chen Zhangxiang, Joanna Chew Yujiao, Sandra Elizabeth Lee and Tam Zhi Cong, won the Third Prize, $1000, in the University/Polytechnic category of the National Climate Change Competition 2011. The competition is about coming up with a proposal and prototype to promote the awareness of climate change among students and to involve students in caring for the environment by showing how individual actions can affect the climate and the environment. Beginning in June 2011, the students were subjected through 3 rounds of assessments by renowned judges from both public and private sectors. The competition was organized by the National Climate Change Secretariat under the Prime Minister Office. Congratulations to Zen, Joanna, Sandra and Zhi Cong..

Best Four Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Award 2011


Lim Yu Ke, the past subcommittee member of Energy Oasis, the CER Student Club, was accorded as one of the twelve Bayer Young Environmental Envoy 2011. Being the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy, he had designed, built and implemented his proposed environmental project. the Solar Driven Neighborhood Compost Tumbler at Kampung Senang, the organic farm located at Tampines. The project enables Kampung Senang to recycle the solid waste from their farm and the nearby BEST Supermarket into useful compost in a sustainable way. On 16 September 2011, after completion of the environmental project and undergone a judging interview, he received an award plaque at a formal awarding ceremony at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Singapore from the Guest of Honour, Dr Amy Khor. In addition, he was also accorded as one of the Best Four Bayer Young Environmental Envoy envoys, adjudged to have the best environmental projects and will join their counterparts from across four continents in an all-expense paid educational trip to Germany on October 15-22, 2011. Congratulation to Yu Ke!

EO Sports Day @ TP



On 12 Aug 2011, Energy Oasis organised and held a sports event, the EO Sports Day, at Tembusu Grove in the school grounds. It was mainly organized to encourage team building between classmates, bonding among CER year 1 and year 2 students and for everyone to have fun. The sports event consists of 2 categories namely Soccer and Captain's ball. About 80 students supported the event and EVEN LECTURERS were invited to have a match. The event started at around 3pm at ended at around 5pm, though it was a short 2 hours event it was a memorable day where the competitors sweat and have fun on the field.

Study Trip to Neste Oil Plant







On Wednesday, 10 Aug 2011, after classes and accompanied by lecturers, some year 2 and year 3 CER students visited Neste Oil Plant in Tuas. From the talk by the person-in-charge, we were introduced to the production, raw materials, uses, advantages to biodiesel that they are producing and many more interesting information. Although we could not tour the production plant due to safety issues, we managed to view the massive structures from afar before leaving. Overall, such visits brings reality to our course and subject and is an eyeopener to all of us.

World Leadership Conference




From 13th to 15th July 2011, a group of students from Clean Energy participated in the World Leadership Conference 2011. A build up to the Rio+20 Earth Summit, the World Leadership Conference is the platform for young environmental leaders to turn their passions in environmental into actions. It is also a platform for like-minded youths from all over Asia Pacific to come together to learn, voice out and take action to move towards a green sustainable future for planet Earth. The three days workshops and seminars have allowed us to gain more knowledge about climate change. We have also managed to make new friends and exchanged ideas and views about saving the Earth. Overall, it was a great experience!
